Estimated entropy - a guide to relative strength, not a guarantee.
How to create a password
- Set the length with the slider, anywhere from 4 to 64 characters. It starts at 16.
- Choose which characters to include: uppercase, lowercase, numbers and symbols.
- Tick "Exclude ambiguous characters" if the password will be read or typed by hand. It leaves out 0, O, o, 1, l and I.
- Press Generate, then Copy.
How strong is it?
The strength bar estimates entropy, measured in bits, from the length and the number of different characters in play. Under 28 bits is rated Weak, under 60 Fair, under 80 Good, and 80 or more Strong. A 16-character password using all four character types is comfortably Strong. It is a guide to relative strength, not a guarantee.
Length adds strength faster than anything else. If a website limits which symbols it accepts, turn symbols off and add a few more characters instead.
How it is made
Characters are picked with your browser's cryptographically secure random number generator, the same source used for encryption, and in a way that avoids the slight bias simpler methods introduce. The password is created on your device and is never sent anywhere or saved.
Use a different password for every account, and keep them in a password manager so there is only one to remember.
