How to view and remove photo metadata
- Upload a JPEG photo.
- Read the details stored in it, such as the camera make and model, exposure settings, ISO and, if the camera recorded it, the GPS location.
- Where there is a location, a link opens that spot in Google Maps.
- Press Strip EXIF & Download to save a copy with the metadata removed.
Why it matters
Most phones write hidden information into every photo, and that can include the exact place it was taken. Send the original file by email, add it to a marketplace listing or upload it to a forum, and anyone who downloads it can see where it came from, which might be your home.
Many big social networks remove this data when you upload, but plenty of websites and messaging services do not. Stripping it yourself first means you don't have to rely on them.
Good to know
Removing the EXIF block does not re-compress the picture, so there is no loss of quality and the image looks exactly the same. The tool works with JPEG files only, which is what most cameras produce. If a photo shows "No EXIF data found", it has already been stripped or was saved by software that doesn't keep these details. Opening the Google Maps link sends the coordinates to Google, so skip it if that matters to you.
