Favicon Generator
Upload a square-ish image to get started - it'll be centre-cropped to a square automatically.
How to make a favicon
- Upload an image, ideally square and at least 512 pixels across. Anything else is cropped to a square from the centre.
- Check how it looks at each size in the preview grid.
- Download favicon.ico, and save any of the PNG sizes you need.
What you get
The favicon.ico file holds three sizes, 16, 32 and 48 pixels, which covers browser tabs, bookmarks and older browsers. PNG versions are made at 16, 32, 48, 180, 192 and 512 pixels. The 180 pixel icon is the one Apple devices use when someone adds your site to their home screen, and the 192 and 512 pixel icons are the sizes Android and installable web apps expect.
Adding it to your website
Put favicon.ico in the root of your site, so it can be found at yoursite.com/favicon.ico, and most browsers pick it up automatically. The other sizes are linked from the head of your pages, for example with a link tag using rel="apple-touch-icon" for the 180 pixel file. Many website builders, WordPress and Shopify among them, have a site icon setting that does this for you.
Designing for a tiny space
At 16 pixels there is almost no room for detail. A single letter, a simple symbol or the boldest part of your logo works far better than a full logo with words in it. Strong contrast helps too, because the icon has to stand out on both light and dark browser tabs.
