How to resize and compress an image
- Upload an image, or drop one onto the preview area. Its width, height and file size appear straight away.
- Type a new width or height in pixels. With "Lock aspect ratio" ticked, the other side updates to keep the proportions.
- Choose an output format. "Keep Original" stays with PNG, JPEG or WebP where it can and falls back to PNG otherwise.
- For JPEG or WebP, set the quality slider, then press Download.
After the download, the page shows the original file size next to the new one, so you can see exactly how much you saved.
A smaller file that still looks right
Photos from a phone are usually far larger than a web page needs. Resizing to the width the picture will actually be shown at, often somewhere between 1200 and 2000 pixels, makes the biggest difference. After that, a JPEG or WebP quality of around 75 to 85 normally looks the same as the original while cutting the file size a long way.
PNG ignores the quality setting because it is lossless. It suits screenshots, logos and graphics with sharp edges or transparency. JPEG has no transparency, so see-through areas are filled with white. WebP keeps transparency and is normally smaller than both. To change a picture's shape rather than its size, use the image cropper first.
